Text card: Yoga Alliance is changing how teachers are credentialed. A new assessment and credential model launches in 2027, and the 200-hour and 500-hour training requirements are not going away. Three panels: deadline, 31 Dec 2027, teachers and schools who miss it see their credential lapse; new assessment, 40 questions, teaching and leadership, ethics, safety, and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; to hold it again, $150, recertification fee for a teacher whose credential has lapsed.

New Credentialing Standards

Yoga Alliance is changing how its credentials show skills and knowledge. It is not removing the 200-hour or 500-hour training requirements. The organization says it is launching the new assessment and credential model in 2027 first. The 40-question teacher assessment covers effective teaching and leadership, ethics, safety, and multicultural diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. RYS credentials, which cover programs such as 200, 300, and 500 hours, are not going away. They show a school’s commitment to high standards across all of its programs, not just teacher training.

Deadlines and Requirements

Teachers who miss the December 31, 2027 deadline will see their credential lapse. To hold it again, they will need to pay a $150 recertification fee. Schools that miss the same deadline will also see their credential lapse. Every RYS is expected to maintain a rolling minimum average of 3.5 stars. Each year, schools renew their Ethical Commitment and verify their teachers’ credentials. A new free online assessment for schools covers ethics, compliance, and safety. Starting in 2030, RYTs will complete 30 hours and E-RYTs 40 hours of continuing education every three years.

Membership and Accountability

Yoga Alliance says its all-new membership, launching in 2027, brings benefits and services worth more than $5,000. These include business tools and resources to run and market a teaching practice. After a three-year transition, schools will be able to pay for a credential alone and keep their RYS and specialty designations without a membership. Specialty credentials such as RCYT, RPYT, and YACEP become specialty designations, shown alongside a teacher’s RYT or E-RYT on their profile. Concerns about students, teachers, and schools will be handled through a new Restorative Accountability Framework, which Yoga Alliance describes as transparent and community-centered.
