About the retreat
Getting from Los Angeles to Costa Rica is a single nonstop leg. FlightConnections lists Alaska, Delta and United flying LAX to Juan Santamaría International (SJO) with a scheduled flight time of about 6 hours 5 minutes over 2,721 miles. That makes it one of the shortest tropical retreat hops available from LAX, with no overnight connection and only a one- to two-hour time difference depending on the season.
Blue Osa sits on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica's South Pacific region, about 8 miles from Puerto Jiménez, on a secluded beach backed by rainforest. It is a 13-room property with a capacity of 36 guests, an open-air yoga deck, a chemical-free lap pool, an on-site spa, and an organic garden that supplies the kitchen. Founder Yogi Aaron has taught for over 30 years and developed the AYAMA method used in the classes.
Blue Osa publishes its rates openly: retreat packages run from $1,440 for a 4-day weekend to $2,300 for a full week, and Yoga Alliance teacher trainings from $2,990 for the 200-hour to $4,490 for the 300-hour, with the exact figure depending on room type, single or shared occupancy, and season. Retreat highlights
Alaska, Delta and United fly LAX to San José (SJO) nonstop in roughly 6 hours 5 minutes. From SJO you reach Blue Osa by a 40-minute domestic flight to Puerto Jiménez, a shared shuttle, or a private transfer, all of which the retreat can arrange.
Blue Osa caps out at 36 guests across 13 rooms. Group sizes stay small enough that teachers give individual attention and staff learn names, which is the main structural difference from the larger wellness resorts on the Nicoya side.
Classes run on a second-floor open-air deck about 50 meters from a private beach. Instructors teach across Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Anusara and Kundalini traditions, plus Blue Osa's own AYAMA (Applied Yoga Anatomy + Muscle Activation) method.
No prior yoga experience is required. Blue Osa states that guests regularly arrive with non-practicing partners or family who spend the week on the beach, in the spa, or on excursions instead.
Blue Osa reports that 60 to 70 percent of its guests travel alone. Single-occupancy rooms are available, and shared accommodation is offered at a reduced rate for people who want to meet others.
Three meals a day plus snacks, cooked from scratch using produce from the on-site garden and local farms. Gluten-free, vegan and allergy needs are accommodated when flagged at booking.
A full-service spa offering massage, deep tissue work, Watsu, acupuncture, and treatments made with locally sourced ingredients including fruit facials and body scrubs.
National Geographic has described the Osa Peninsula as the most biologically intense place on Earth. Optional excursions include waterfall rappelling, canopy zip-lining, surfing lessons, stand-up paddleboarding, whale watching, sportfishing and wildlife tours.
Blue Osa runs retreats and trainings all year. December through April is the dry season with reliable sun; May through November is the green season, with lusher rainforest, fewer guests, afternoon showers and reduced pricing.
200-hour trainings run as 14-day intensives and 300-hour advanced trainings as 28 days, both Yoga Alliance certified and including course materials and alumni support.
